SUMMER is still here... Beach Day REDUX for Creative Fall Crafts

Hello creative friends! Here in South Florida SUMMER is pretty much year round but I still like to change things up a bit for the season. Today I am part of a fabulous gathering of Creative Fall Crafts that has new projects and inspiration each day this week!

I only know when Fall arrives by the change of decor and advertisements in stores because where I live it's still SUMMER. So I have a quick and easy way to jazz up my door by repurposing every girls' summer go to... FLIP FLOPS! We all have 'em in all sorts of designs and colors to coordinate with every outfit... am I right?! Using a few paper-crafting techniques, I'm going to give my shoes a new season in the sun!

Let me gather a few things:
Something old... something new...
something borrowed and something BLUE!

This old (pair of flip flops barely if ever used from the closet); a new metal "welcome" word from dollar store; I'm borrowing some sparkly tulle and wreath decor from the Christmas stash; and some fabulous BLUE distressed raffia twine will be the base of my decor.

For this project you need: ribbons/trim/foiliage picks in chosen colors (for me I'm going with a weathered sea-spray feel); a 1" bristle paintbrush; white craft paint: scissors; a glue gun; embossing powder; clear embossing ink; paper plate; sand paper or sanding block; heat gun; scissors; thin floral wire; wire cutters; quilt pins; recycled pop tops; a peg clothespin (or small dowel rod); and some summertime tunes to help bring back those memories of toes in the sand.

The first thing I do is add some hangers to the back of the flip flops by sliding quilt pins into the foamy soles of the shoe.  Be careful not to poke through the front side.

I use two pins criss-crossed down into sole to securely affix a recycled pop top. Easy Peasy!

Then I add a white wash quickly to age these a bit by dry brushing a small amount of white acrylic paint onto the wicker. No rhyme or reason - just all over. However it turns out is perfect. Just a small amount of paint transforms the look from glam to seaside shabby chic.

Next let's add a beachy, distressed finish to the metal "Welcome".
This is quick and easy also - but is a bit messy.

First I rough up the surface with a small sanding block so the embossing adhesive will not bead up and will grab powder nicely.

I place word onto a piece of waxed paper to protect my surface then dab embossing adhesive onto all the letters.

I gently pick up word and place onto a paper plate then sprinkle embossing powder onto the wet adhesive. Tap away excess into the plate and move across to next section until all letters are covered.

Optional: reapply adhesive to any areas that is missing embossing powder.

Using heat gun, I activate the embossing powder. Please safety first – use heat safe finger cots or tweezers to hold letters while heat embossing. This powder is a weathered beach patina and has a variegated coloring that instantly transforms the metal. There are a few areas missing the powder, but that is OK. In this case I am leaving as is because it adds to the weathered, beachy feel.

One last thing will tie this together with the shoes.
I quickly dry brush a bit of white overall and this is done!

It's really hard to capture new finish from far away.
Here's a close-up of the yummy, distressed texture.

I tie some tulle bows on the straps of the shoes and I'm ready for some final assembly.

I fashion a hanger by layering the two base raffias and
wrapping some broom grass around a wooden clothespin.

I put up a hook and hung on the door then added the flip flops with a small pieces of wire and a couple supporting mini sticky back hanger hooks.

This is my assortment of floral sprigs. This cute seasonal grass broom was taken apart to use at the top of my hanger. I'll have to use the scarecrow for something else.

I continued to nestle the floral sprigs in and around the straps of the shoes.

I added a fluffy tulle bow to the top to conceal the hanger.

The last thing was to affix the word welcome with a couple of strategically hidden spots of hot glue.

Honestly, I was not sure how this was going to turn out when I started. This is so beautiful I want to put this outside on my door step. The only reason I don't is because I don't have an overhang and we are in the middle of hurricane season – which brings daily severe thunderstorms. I hope you like it as much as I do.

You can't Pinch Me... My #Cre8time is Gold and Green

Hello friends and Happy St. Patrick's Day! Lucky for me I married into an Irish Clan so I have a free pass on this green pinching game. This month the Designer Crafts Connection was challenged to work with the new oly*fun™ Metallic Fabric... only one word can describe this new fabricWOW!!! CLICK HERE to hop on over to the Designer Crafts Connection blog and be inspired by all the shimmer and shine!

Today I'm using the new gold Oly*fun™ to make a fun ribbon rosette for St. Patrick's Day that will give some flair to my fun Irish themed embellishments and buttons from the dollar store.

Oly*fun™ – the EVERYTHING material now shimmers, sparkles and shines in Gold, Silver, Rose Gold and Red. So easy to cut and does not fray {hemming is not required}. It's perfect for crafts, costumes, accessories, home décor and more. Oly*fun™ metallics are available in 10 yard bolts, 30" wide. You can find it at your local craft/fabric stores, order online, or jump on over HERE to win one bolt in the metallic color of your choice!

I've had these pins from the dollar store for ages and I've only ever worn one... so I thought why not jazz them up and make them ribbon rosettes. The metallic
oly*fun™ is the perfect compliment to the shine and dimension of the buttons.

I probably could have skipped mounting the fabric to cardstock and just mounted the fabric back-to-back. But since I was adding a heavy pinback button, I thought it was a good idea to make it a bit stiffer.

I took a scrap of 6" x 9" green cardstock and mounted it to a slightly oversized cut of gold oly*fun™ using double-sided adhesive sheets. It's easy to cut with scissors and I trimmed back the edges with my guillotine cutter.

Following instructions for rosettes over at Scor-Pal® {tutorial here}, I scored both sides of the paper fabric to create peaks and valleys at 1/2" increments.

Quick and easy! Then I divided this into three 2" sections. Since I was winging the size, I hoped it will be large enough to frame my largest button which is about 3" across. Then the fun begins folding back and forth to make the accordions.

With some double sided tape, I joined the three sections together into one long accordion while my hot glue gun was warming up. It takes about 4 hands to hold a rosette down to secure, but I managed. I applied hot glue slightly around the edge and placed one of my faux gold coins on top... this did the trick on the first try! I repeated on the back and I was ready to finish up. I fashioned the ribbon tail out of another section backed with cardstock, a smaller section popped up on chipboard. Now how to finish??! I could add  ribbon or words, but I think I'm just going to keep going with the green and gold shamrocks.

After gluing a pinback onto the back of the rosette, I layered on a few foamy glitter shamrocks and three shamrock stickers on the tail to finish it off. I just love the shimmer and shine of the oly*fun™ metallic and it's quite reflective.

I can see myself using this A LOT for cardmaking and other crafting projects needing that POP of bling... and making pinned rosettes for every holiday occasion!!

Award Winning Shamrock!

#Cre8time for #Upcycled Handmade Holiday Decorations... Christmas in July Bloghop with The Robins Nest and Smoothfoam™

It's Christmas in July!! Have you started your handmade holiday cards or giftmaking? I have and I just returned from having a Christmas in July with my whole family in Chicago. This trip it was hot, just like South Florida... but anytime I'm home in Chicago I can get in the holiday spirit... and I've captured "Frosty" in a snowglobe!

Today you are in for a treat - so go grab some hot chocolate and some cookies! Today we have a new Designer Crafts Connection Bloghop which we have teamed up with Smoothfoam™ and The Robin's Nest... making dimensional, paper-crafted Christmas projects to get you ready for the holidays and early enough to get your holiday Cre8time creations started.

I began with a Smoothfoam™ 12" x 12" x 5/8" Scrapbook Page Mount and one 2 1/2" Diameter Ball cut in half, then quartered. The Smoothfoam™ is suprisingly easy to cut and doesn't leave a blizzard of foam bits around.

I'm fashioning my snow globe from recycled one liter water bottle, topped off with a recycled wine cork, and a recycled container lid for a base. I trimmed the bottom off the bottle, laid on side and traced shape onto The Robin's Nest Black and White Pinetree Glitter Cardstock with a pencil. I cut the shape using a paper trimmer for straight edges and scissors to round the top, then slid into bottle to test fit. After a few adjustments to the height and width - this snowy scene is a perfect fit!

The foam circle cut serves as a base for my snow globe scene which will be concealed when complete. This will help suspend my background and snowman. Using a metal ruler I created a gap going about halfway through the foam to slide the pinetree cardstock into. I hot glued a section of the quartered foam ball to each side of the background paper.

After fussy cutting The Robin's Nest Glitter Snowmen, I added some dimensional glaze to the hat, eyes and nose and adhered Black Diamond Dew Drops to his front. The scarf is a tied section of Robin's nest rick-rack with edges frayed. I added clear adhesive to keep fraying to a mininum - this darkened the The Robin's Nest Rusty Rose Rickrack... so I added more lines adhesive to create a striped effect. So cute!

I could have two completely different scenes in my snowglobe, but for this project - I made it the same with a snowman on each side. The embellished snowmen are hot glued to the base. I filled in around the base with some scrunched up white tulle and a section of recycled tree tinsel.

I punched a snowflake from The Robin's Nest Stormy Skies Glittered Cardstock, then adhered six Clear Diamond Dew Drops in a star pattern to add dimension and shine. This will be my topper accent piece - nestled amongst a wrapping of fuzzy fibers and a wrap of matching Rusty Rose Rickrack.

Using a clear adhesive, I glued Pearl and Red Diamond Dew Drops around the edge of my recycled container lid - this adds some color and transforms the lid into a whimsical base for my snow globe.

I tore a strip of
The Robin's Nest Stormy Skies Glittered Cardstock and wrapped around base of bottle to add a layer of faux snow and to conceal edges of foam structure inside. Placed onto the blinged up base... this scene is complete.

"Frosty the Snowman" in a Bottle!
