What's more "MANLY" than Cowboys and BACON? Unruly Paper Arts August Readers Art Quest

Hello Everyone... where is August going??! Well it's time for some more inspiration for the current Reader's Art Quest at Unruly Paper Arts. This month's challenge theme is "MANLY". What's more manly than cowboys and bacon?!! For this month's inspiration I created a fun card using some scraps of handmade painted papers paired with a fun stamped cowboy image and quote.

http://www.unrulypaperarts.com/2015/08/august-2015-reader-art-quest.html

The Unruly Paper Arts Reader's Art Quest "MANLY" Inspiration photo and color palette, are a little dusty and perhaps a little grungy, with a POP of color.

I began with a 5" x 7" cardstock base to which I glued a painted papertowel {resulting from mopping up spray mists from faux leathering paper}, layered with a scrap of corrugated painted with Faber-Castell Gelatos {leftover from this seasonal art}. I layered the stamps ""Keep Calm and Put Bacon On"" and Cowboy with Lasso, from Viva Las VegaStamps! on cream cardstock, each double matted on recycled brown envelope, brown cardstock and a torn edge.

I hope you enjoyed my project and that you are inspired to join us in this month's Reader's Art Quest. I would love to see what you create. Please leave me a comment with your link.  :) Sb

Daring to try New Colors and Techniques for Anything But a Card Challenge No. 49 "ANYTHING GOES"

Greetings Friends! I hope you are having a fabulous 4th of July weekend. Today begins a brand new challenge at Anything But a Card Challenges

The new Challenge... is OPEN! With summertime in full swing... we want to see what you're creating! Anything But a Card Challenges No. 49 is ANYTHING GOES. Share you're creations, whatever it may be... scrapbooking, collage, ATCs, tags, art journal pages, altered shrines... whatever tickles your muse and her fancy!

Challenges are a fun way to push yourself to try new things and new styles – and to be perfectly honest – this was way out of my creative box. I was a bit scared as to how I would tackle this challenge board... it's totally out of my box and I had butterflies in my stomach until my creation was complete! But I'm so glad I played along.

I started with a watercolor paper that I monoprinted with a blend of blue and green metallic Ranger Adirondack acrylics. Then I scribbled and smooshed on some blues and green Faber-Castell Gelatos to my liking. Using gel medium I fused a ghost monoprint on deli paper, which glues the layers together while giving translucency to colors below.

I wanted to have a scribbly heart, so I made a dribbly heart mask {click here to see how to} and placed onto my background then sprayed with black Ditto glimmer spray.

Look at all the glorious blue and green exposed! I brushed some water at the top where the spray was still a bit wet and let the black color drip down. This was fun and a bit scary... I'm a total newbie to the dripping technique.

I gave a blast with the heat gun to dry everything and added a few strokes of Gelatos to the heart. To finish this mini masterpiece, I overstamp a bubble wrap texture and spell out "dare to dream" with Hero Arts Unicorn white pigment ink {love this new white ink} and heat set. I stamped, embossed and fussy cut butterfly wings on matching painted paper. I gently slide the my collage into a Deflecto Acrylic Craft Frame and tucked the wings off each edge... and I have a new inspirational whimsy.

My LOVE of STAMPING meets #Cre8time Organization

Hello Everyone! Today is the first monday of February {as well as Groundhog's Day here in the U.S.} which brings another Designer Crafts Connection Bloghop! Our creatives are sharing projects of "LOVE This..." which is anything having to do with creativity - tools, techniques, products, or craft genre!

I don't know about you, but for me January flew by in like a minute... and I'm trying to "SIMPLIFY" my life in 2015. I've combined my love of STAMPING and MIXED-MEDIA to create a creative calendar, by mounting an original stamped collage into an acrylic craft frame that I can change for each month with some fun wet-erase markers.

In my effort to reorganize my life and Cre8time, my stash of Deflecto Craft Solutions are making my studio, sleek and streamlined... but also modern and completely "ME".

This project is featuring the Deflecto Hanging 8 1/2" x 11" Craft Frame #68201CR – which I measured out a blank calendar grid marked out with thin washi tapes... quick and easy!

Starting with a blank sheet of white letter size uncoated cardstock, I used clear embossing fluid to stamp images onto sheet; then applying embossing powder and heat embossing to create an emboss resist. I worked in sections at a time, stamping, applying powder then heating to build up a scene. This is one of my favorite stamping techniques and is totally worth the time invested to build a background.

Now for the MAGIC! I colored over the top with Faber-Castell Gelatos and blended out with my finger. In doing this, some of the stamped images blend into the background becoming more muted adding depth and interest. Much of the stamped imagery gets covered up, so to expose the resist areas I gently rub the surface with a papertowel to remove the color away from the embossed areas... and the embossed white areas reappear! Love... love... LOVE!!! I repeated adding layers color and rubbing away until coloring was to my liking.

I have an instant mixed media painting... with stamps! I have so many stamped images here to create my "mind's eye" scene... too many to count, so I have listed all below in supplies list.

With my collage complete - I gently slide it into the frame and prepare for hanging. Super easy and protected from the elements... a total INSPIRATION piece!

I used my labelmaker to make some days of the week title stickers for the top of my calendar grid, then topped off the frame with sari ribbon and hemp twine for hanging. My calendar can be changed easily each month with wet erase markers.

HARK... an ELF is Born for the Fairfield World Handmade Holiday Challenge with Designer Crafts Connection

Welcome to another special Designer Crafts Connection Challenge - using products from Fairfield World. We have been challenged to make handmade holiday gifts or decor featuring Fairfield World's Poly-fil line - fiberfill, batting, poly-fil beads, pillow inserts, and more I had my visions of sugarplums dancing in my head and designs on making my very own "Elf on the Shelf" sitter.

In today's project I have used Poly-fil Poly-Pellets Stuffing Beads, Crafter's Choice Dry Polyester Fiberfill, and oly*fun™ - all from Fairfield World. Other supplies used: Smoothfoam baby head; Super Sculpey polymer clay; Faber-Castell Gelatos; Faber-Castell PITT pens; Faber-Castell Gesso; Sewing Machine; Water Brush; Tonic Scissors and Beacon Fabri-Tac Adhesive.

Join us today November 7th through 14th for this special Fairfield World Handmade Holiday Challenge. For this event there is a fabulous giveaway too {please scroll down for Rafflecopter entry info}.

To begin, I ventured over to Pinterest to look up some elves for reference to sketch out a quick pattern for the body, arms and legs. The official "Elf on the Shelf" is a simple shape, that's full of personality and my Smoothfoam baby head is perfect to create my own little mischievous elf to have some holiday pictoral fun.

I primed the head with gesso and then mixed up a nice skin tone with peach and several pink Gelatos blended with a bit of watered down gesso. I built up the color in layers until I arrived at a nice skin tone. When the base color was completely dry - I used a sponge dauber to apply some Gelatos to create rosy cheeks.

Now to brink my ELF to life... she needs a face! I painted a base layer in the eyes with the large white Faber-Castell PITT pen, then added blue and finally the black accents and eyelashes using PITT brush pens. The fine tip of the brush nibs came in really handy in working on such small details.

The final touch is magenta PITT brush pen added with a water brush to control intensity of red on the lips. Now with the face done, I set this aside to dry and I have a second baby head wrapped in plastic wrap to buildup some dimensional hair using the Super Sculpey clay. I did this by rolling out thin coils and layering in curl shapes around the face and ears. I did have to bake this to harden per instructions on package. I stained the polymer clay hair with a combination of brown Gelatos. The clay did make my head a bit top heavy, but I sorted that out when I fashion the body and fill with the stuffing beads.

The body and clothing came together really quick and easy using oly*fun™ and a combination of machine sewing and Fabri-Tac adhesive. The arms and legs are filled with the Crafter's Choice Dry Polyester Fiberfill and the body filled with the Poly-fil Poly-Pellets Stuffing Beads, so she will be sitting pretty and not topple over. I think she needs a skirt. When I construct the skirt, I will use this to add a bit more weight to her by making the skirt filled with more of the stuffing beads.

My Handmade "SCOUT" Elf is
already getting into mischief!

Springtime is #Cre8time at HOME with Unruly Paper Arts May Reader's Art Quest

Hello Everyone... welcome to May! It's a new month and I'm happy to share a brand new upcycled mixed media project for the new Reader's Art Quest at Unruly Paper Arts. This month's challenge theme is "HOME" and you know how I love a good challenge!

I really enjoyed created something new - and at the same time giving a proper home for bits of this and that on my craft room table. It's springtime and I've been doing some much needed sorting and purging of my studio - along with finishing countless UFOs {unfinished objects} which are cluttering my desk... and MIND!

Following the Unruly Paper Arts Reader's Art Quest "Home" Inspiration photo and color palette, I set out to collect some items for creating. I have a few Amazing Casting Resin house pieces created from an embroidery kit frame molded using Amazing Mold Putty. I had one of these in a baggy with some scraps of Bo-Bunny papers, embellishments and ribbon - such a good starting point. This month's issue is "Fabric Frenzy" so I also added some muslin to the mix.

Then my "ONE TOUCH RULE" started taking effect. In gathering other supplies - I happened upon this mini kraft tote that had the label removed. Hmmm! Perhaps this will make a lovely base for a mixed media piece.

I selected this section of muslin fabric monoprinted using my Amazing No-Gelatin Rubber Plate {my DIY version of a gellie plate}. When I'm playing and monoprinting I use extra papers, fabric swatches and other items to pick-up second/third print pulls. For this pattern, I had been impressing large bubble wrap into the paint to make texture and it will make a nice sky background for my "home" scene.

My selection of vintage lace, ribbon and knotted twine in the color palette. I might cut up this large loopy lace for clouds... we'll see how things progress.

I set off to work preparing my kraft tote to be a base for hanging art. I cut off the paper handles {which will be reused in another crafty project} and glued the sides and flap and a piece of cardstock inside to make a sturdy flat piece.

I try to be conscious in the beginning of how I'm going to display/house a creation. One thing I love using for upcycled projects is soda can pulls! With a decorative brad - they make a quick and easy hanger.

The whole is poked through the base bag and buried into the glued layers of my finished project. This is ready to hang!

View from the back with tab/hanger bent slightly for easy hanging on a pushpin.

I built up the layers on the front with a couple layered pieces of white cardstock with torn edges - slightly larger than my base bag.

Using a pale yellow acrylic paint I brushed some color around the border. I trimmed the monoprinted muslin to size and frayed the edges. I adhered another piece of white cardstock to the back of the fabric using a Miracle Sheet {sheets of double sided adhesive that can be cut to size} for stability and added strength. Before adhering - I added a little painterly details...

Faber-Castell Gelatos are my new obsession that are now a staple in my daily travel tote! I've found storage boxes that are the perfect size and I have two bins so far. I've even added color names to each of them with my P-Touch labeler {yes I have a little creative OCD}!

Using my new Nathalie Kalbach Stampendous stamps, and a variety of Faber Castell Gelatos - I applied color directly to the faux burlap stamp to simulate grass and pops of pink for flowers.

I spritzed the Gelatos with water and then pressed onto the fabric. I didn't use an acrylic block to ensure I pressed into the texture and cracks of the painted fabric. I let this dry completely and then peel the backing off the Miracle Sheet and adhere to my prepared base.

I stamped across the bottom edge of the fabric and I filled in the remaining 1/2" at the bottom using a water brush picking up color from the green gelatos used. I love the subtle watercolor effect and it complements the monoprinted bubble wrap background. I have a dark green pom-pom trim that I will add for additional dimension and as a horizon line for my scene. This will be layered upon a lace ribbon colored with green Gelatos blended with water to match my stamped garden. I placed my assembled house complete with resin domino door and mini bicycle onto the scene and filled in a faux fence with the knotted twine and cut apart section of May Arts wooded trim. I painted vertical stripes in with waterbrush and chocolate gelato to finish the fence... creating a nice contrast of dimension and color.

The base Bo-Bunny Paper that I trimmed to fit behind my Amazing Casting Resin house was a bit bright and blue. So I gently applied a gesso wash over it to mute the colors down, then applied a mix of pinks and yellow gelatos to marry this to the Unruly Paper Arts May Reader's Art Quest "Home" color palette challenge.

I also smudged some yellow and pink gelatos to the doily I was placing behind this house. I had already adhered these together, so mini Post-Its make masking quick and easy. I placed the Bo-Bunny flower as a "sun". As I started assembling the pieces to the fabric background, I decided to remove the flower. I wanted to give the scene balance and place the sun in front of some sparkly rays.

Using Post-its - I quickly masked around my white paper border to prepare for some misting. Then using T!m Holtz "RAYS" Stampers Anonymous layering stencil and Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist, I created some shimmering yellow rays for my floral sun.

This did the trick and gives balance to the house on the opposite side of my piece to complete the sky scene. Now it's time for those little finishing touches... a bronze colored dragonfly covers the gluedot residue I couldn't remove from the doily; and some Sakura of America Gelly Stardust Holgram hand-drawn details.

With addition of some adhesive gems for window on an Amazing Casting Resin domino door; and flower shapes and round gems to fill in this blossoming garden... this scene is complete! This scene just makes me smile.

I hope you enjoyed my project and that you are inspired to join us in this month's Reader's Art Quest. My "thoughtful abstractions" column for the May "Fabric Frenzy" issue of Unruly Paper Arts will be coming up on the 21st... you certainly want to SAVE the DATE. I would love to see what you create. Please leave me a comment with your link.

Happy Creating! :) Sb
