#Steampunk Owly's #Cre8time Secret... Starting from the Same Place #artistcollab

This is the contents of my bubble envy of crafty goodness from Tina. Everyone got the same assortment to use with the only stipulation that we use it all.

Amazing Casting Products provided supplies needed to produce hundreds of molded resin cast pieces to be made for each player {all handmade} and Beacon Adhesives supplied Fabric Tac adhesive.

This collaboration project took lots time and Cre8time love donated by countless volunteers who gathered, prepared and sent in goodies to Tina who undertook the effort of dividing up and shipping care packages to each artist... and don't forget all of the technical coordination for getting everyone linked up for viewing today.

In the effort of full honesty... this collaborative has been months in the making and my piece just began in the last 12 hours as I wasn't sure what my muse wanted to make and for the past several days I have been lending my techy-ness to the group in helping everyone sync up online today. 

So you can say this project is "freshly hatched" LOL!

I grabbed 3 bottles of acrylic that were within reach one this purple distress paint. The other two were Paper Artsy - and aged gold and an espresso brown color. So I set off painting items purple.

Using the Stencil Girl Stencil... I started out applying purple with the dauber top, then I ended up smudging it out with a dry paintbrush. The purple "POPPED" so nicely on the swatch of green upholstery fabric.

I layered purple, gold and espresso brown paints on a flower accent and the resin and chipboard pieces building up a purple metallic patina finish. At this point there's more paint on my hands than the items I'm painting... it's a GOOD THING! 

I also stenciled another painted scrap of material and a word flash card that had "decorate". I think I decorated it proper.

I use the Beacon Fabri-Tac to start assembling my critter's wonky eyes. I love these little tubes with a precision application tip... it made getting precise application easy without having to use toothpicks to apply from the larger bottle.

Here's the final layered eyes. Love them!! I included a circle of fabric to help the flower accent pop in the center of the smaller gear.

Now with all the pieces painted and assembled... I freehand cut shapes to make the body and features. No pattern and NO SEWING today. And I'm about an hour into project creation.

I don't know what this fabric is but it's a thick and felt like. I especially love the coloring. I folded in half and cut into two pieces. Then I shaped them to have pointy ears making a front and back.

I used these electronic bits to act as stitching for my bird's belly by pressing ends through the layers of fabric and folded over on the inside. I did glue fabric to body also for added stability. I love the interesting detail these create!!!

After gluing the ears and top of head, I folded ends over and used remaining stenciled fabric to close in the bottom and act as a base. I didn't even trim this - it just happened to fit!

I added other pieces to accent ears and glued on the eyes. I love how fast the Fabri-Tac sets up. I have an OWL!!

On the backside, my owl has a backpack from his mountain climbing journey to Pike's Peak... see his ropes. I couldn't bring myself to cut this little piece of history so I made some kitschy accessories layering the remaining electronic bits and my painted word strip. I have used everything and the only a few trimmed scraps of felt and green fabric remain along with the resin dragonfly. OH YEAH... I just remembered, I was going to cut the wings off and use them for feet. Well, since it didn't get painted that will have to wait until my next play day. 

I'm totally in LOVE with my wonky steampunk owl... and from start to complete in under two hours. 

So what is OWLy's Cre8time Secret??!

He's now the official secret hiding place to stash my flask - LOL!! How fun is that! I was going to fill with polyfill beads, though I can't remember where I stashed it. I think this was serendipitous that the flask happened to be a perfect fit nestled inside my quirky birds belly.

#Halloween's almost Here and I'm Going a Little Batty in my #Cre8time

Greetings Friends! It's the last Monday of October and time for another Deflecto USA Ambassador Design Team Challenge. This month we've set off in another direction, and today's project is just one of many I have or our "Clips, Grips and Tags... Oh My" Challenge. This month's challenge is perfect for the upcoming holiday season which is fast approaching and starts with Halloween.

I don't have children {yet} and don't normally dress up as Halloween falls during the big annual international boat show here in SoFL. This means my hubs and I are usually working doubletime prior to and during the event {and it falls over Halloween every year}. But I do LOVE to wear festive head adornments that are easy on and off... and I set out to make a fabulous Halloween Fascinator using oly*fun™ fabric, a headband, tulle, lace, seasonal floral/feather picks, Beacon Fabri-Tac adhesive, and some fun metal tags from Deflecto.

I have fallen in love with oly*fun™ and have been using it for all kinds of projects. CLICK HERE to read more new fabric from Fairfield World. oly*fun™ comes in a fun assortment of 18 colors which makes creating pretty much anything possible... especially when it comes to making costumes. To begin, I sketched a bat pattern template on some cardstock, cut out and traced onto a couple colors of oly*fun™ using a white pencil.

I cut out a variety of circles to create a "one-eyed" bat, two layers of my bat in black and one in purple that was slightly larger to give some added detail.

Now to prepare my layers for gluing. I made three layers thick for extra stability and because I will be embedding the Deflecto metal tags in between the layers so that my wings will fly and I can mount bat vertically on my headband.

I've also dismantled a purple tulle fairy skirt from the Dollar Tree to add some additional details. One circle is the last layer for an added touch of whimsy.

Using Beacon Fabri-Tac adhesive, I glued down the layers of my one-eyed bat and then moved on to adhere the black front to the purple center layer. I set aside the other black bat which will be the backside to conceal all of my support mechanisms inside.

Before I add the support system, I have added some tulle fringe to the edges of the wings... it's whimsical, girly and OF COURSE - purple!! I glued gathered strips along the edge using Fabri-tac - all of which will be hidden after final assembly.

This project features the Deflecto Flexible Sign Dangler Item Number 20014, which are 6" flexible thin silver metal strips with an adhesive tab on each end. Twist it, bend it, flex it and add a sign where needed. They come in a 20 piece package. I've bent and wrapped a couple around my headband as supports when I mount my bat vertically, and there will be more concealed within the layers of fabric.

These strips are be perfect to add structure and stability for my batty fascinator - keeping it's wings in flight without sagging. I left a small pocket open in the bottom of the eye to insert the tabs mounted to the headband when I'm ready to wear.

Now I have a little discoloration in a couple places that are from the adhesive seeping through the fabric. Thinking quick on my feet... I knew exactly what to do. ADD BLING!!!

I grabbed my black soot Ranger Distress Stickles and started adding glittery detail to my bat and concealing the problem areas in the process.

This turned out to be a happy accident as the detail added personality to "Ms. Bat". I had to let this sit overnight to dry, but it was so worth the wait.

Batty Fascinator... all ready to wear!

I wrapped some black tulle and lace around the base of my headband and gently slid the bat onto the mounts. When I'm ready to wear, I will remove the adhesive tabs and press them down for permanent adhesion. I've gathered my resin skull pendant choker, spooky spiderweb cape and the seasonal floral/feather picks to add height and drama to my "Batty Fascinator". I tried it out on a test run to plan my updo... all I can say is that it's going to be so AMAZING on Halloween. #Cre8time goes on Safari for the Designer Crafts Connection Home Décor Challenge

Welcome to another special Designer Crafts Connection Bloghop - this time it's a Home Décor Challenge. Upon receipt of my challenge materials provided by Kunin Felt, Beacon Adhesives and Buttons Galore and More, it was a bit of a challenge to decide what I wanted to create. I had a "lightbulb" moment and decided upon a greencrafting project - one that goes along with the decor in my bedroom and take my muse to the serengeti.

Join us today September 7th through 14th for this special Home Décor Challenge by the Designers Craft Connection where we are challenged to create an amazing home decor project utilizing Kunin Felt, Beacon Adhesives and Buttons from Buttons Galore and More! I was sent an assortment of gorgeous felt, buttons and Beacon Felt Glue and Fabri-Tac Adhesives. I've planned on altering a recycled tequila box into a fashionable lamp, so these adhesives and the pre-cut felt squares will make my work "NO SEW". I will alter some of the buttons to make them a uniform color that will coordinate with the felt and painted wooden shapes to be used for feet.

An extra added bonus to this "GREEN" project... all of the Kunin Felt I received is ECO-FI Polyester made from post-consumer plastic bottles. I totally dig that! I'm all for utilizing GREEN products.

My husband likes a certain brand of tequila which to my delight comes with a gorgeous sturdy linen paper box that I get to use for my Cre8time purposes. I removed the lid and gently disassembled to gain access to the interior where I will mount one of two puck lights. There is a handy hole already cut here that just happens to be the same size as the LED portion of the light. I will mount the other in the bottom where there is a larger circle from securing the bottle.

The paper of the box is black, but my felt are in a variety of browns so I took the extra step to paint the edges of the box that will be exposed with an Expresso Adirondack acrylic paint dauber by Ranger. These dauber tops make painting quick and easy!

A little discovery that also made my project easier is that I was able to cut the felt on my 12" X-ACTO guillotine cutter. I'm still doing a happy dance about this! Since I was cutting rectangles and squares to cover parts of my recycled box, precision cutting was going to be important. I couldn't have cut them better by hand, unless I measured and marked each piece first.

 

I started out with the Cheetah print and made this the lining of the light, so I could utilize the contrasting beautiful brocade textured felt on the outside.

The Beacon Felt Glue tacks up quickly, and dries clear. I did find out that it's not so great for felt-to-felt adhesion - so for that I used the Fabri-Tac. I continued around adding felt panels around the entire box, and on the lid. For the edging at top and bottom, I doubled up the layer of brown felt to give more dimension and a nice curved finished edge {this is where I needed to adhere felt to felt}. I added a decorative ribbon trim around the edging using tiny dabs of Fabric-Tac in a few places on each side.

The bottom of the box I brushed with a combination of gold, bronze and the espresso acrylic paint to match some wooden pieces I had painted already leftover from another project. I finished off the feet with altered buttons painted first overall with black, then a combination of metallic Ranger Alcohol inks.

I repeated the alcohol ink process to create a layered button accent for the top of my lamp. I recolor my buttons often when I don't have one or enough in the color that I need {this certainly helps in using all the buttons in my stash}.

The feature of the lamp is the two battery powered LED tap lights installed. The light is not too bright, gives a nice glow, and makes for a great accent nightlight. I picked these up at my grocery store - they come in a 2 pack for about $6 {the dollar store version aren't quite powerful enough}.

So from what began as this assortment of supplies... 

Has been transformed into a stunning LED touch lamp that matches perfectly with the Asian/Safari decor in my bedroom {the one room that we have really actually decorated}. The cheetah print felt lining glows nicely in the light and fits in with my wooden carved safari accent pieces and the embossed felt blends in beautifully with the light and dark wood furniture, wicker pieces and the handmade banana paper wall in the backdrop. This is simply beautiful!
