Just ToO SpOokY Cute... DIY Cookie Cutter Ornaments

Happy Fall everyone... though it still feels like SUMMER around here. Halloween is just around the corner and it's time to get decorating and making for the big day. What do you do with all of your leftover goodies from last year that didn't see the light of day??! You alter them into something fun! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays for making goodies and these SpOokY cute ornaments are so adorable wrapped up in colorful seasonal ribbons.

I'm transforming this fun dollar bin find into some super SpOoky Cute cookie cutter ornaments. Gather around the kids because this project is super easy and fun for all ages!

For this project you only need a couple things: scissors; ribbons/trim in seasonal colors; an adhesive runner; a black permanent marker; and some holiday spirit!

For this project I have used my favorite Herma Dotto adhesive. The Herma Dotto is a dry adhesive that it great for tacking down ribbon on cards, scrapbook pages and flat surfaces. I have loads of adhesives and runners of all kinds and I love how the dotto works with ribbon. You can use whatever adhesive you prefer for this project.

I begin with the pumpkin and I choose a beautiful variegated orange ribbon. I add a stripe of Herma Dotto adhesive to the end to tack in place, then begin winding the ribbon around the cookie cutter. I continued wrapping, slightly overlapping the previous wrap and continue all the way around. When I reached the beginning, I add another stripe of Dotto adhesive to secure the end. Easy Peasy!

Next I selected an orange, gold and green check pattern, then wrapped around outer edge of pumpkin shape to measure and cut to size. I applied adhesive along the entire length and press into place. I left about 2" overhang and looped this back over onto itself to form a leaf shape.

The finishing touch is to add a hanger and some contrast to the stem with a sheer irridescent ribbon. For the hanger, I cut a piece that was about 10" and tied to the top of the stem, knotting in place with the two loose ends meeting at the top. I laid the two ends over each other and tied in a knot to form a closed loop to hang. Then I cut another small section, added some adhesive to the end and wrapped around the entire stem area. Then I back trimmed and tacked down the loose end to complete.

This ornament is complete and totally full Pumpkin Spice... now to embellish the bat cookie cutter.

I have chose a silver/grey ribbon that is two-tone like brushed metal - lighter on one side and slightly darker on the other. I applied Dotto adhesive down the length of this ribbon and applied to the outer edge of the cookie cutter.

I repeated by centering a contrasting patterned ribbon right on top of the grey ribbon - a quick and easy transformation!

This ornament also needs a hanger but I don't have anything black... no worries I'll color one. I grabbed my spool of natural burlap string and a black Sharpie marker and quickly color a section black to match. Don't be afraid to use your crafty stash of inks, markers and paints to color white or natural colored ribbons/fibers to match.

These two ornaments are so lovely - they can be used for seasonal decor, gift toppers or even for the kids to make at the Halloween party.

Cutting up some SpOoky Cute Ornaments for May Arts Design Team Call Round 2

Greetings everyone! The year is flying by and it's already mid summer - WOW! I have a craft show coming up in three weeks so I am in a frenzy making handmade holiday goodness for my shoppe "Salon D'Arte" which will be at the my Big Bang Bazaar [an Indie Craft Show} on August 9th. I haven't  done a show in a while so I've stocked up on my May Arts Ribbons to adorn my handmade ornaments, cards and mini books.

Today's project I'm sharing is a variation on the cookie cutter Christmas ornaments {CLICK HERE to view}… but this time super SpOoky Cute for Halloween. We've been doing a lot of cooking at home on the weekends lately and one day I came across this package of seasonal cookie cutters stashed in the deep, dark recesses of my pantry. I think they came from the Dollar Spot area at Target and they are older than I can remember. One touch rule in effect… these headed straight into the crafting pile with the Christmas cookie cutters for rebirth as ornaments!

These are super quick and easy to make and you only need a couple things. I gather some scissors; my stash of May Arts ribbons in seasonal colors; Herma Dotto by EK Success adhesive runner {my personal preference for flat ribbon}; a black Sharpie marker; and some holiday spirit! **PLEASE NOTE** I made every effort to locate links for all ribbon used at May Arts website, though some patterns may be retired.

Now I'm ready for some fun! 

I set off on embellishing the pumpkin and bat cookie cutters.

First up the pumpkin…

I selected this beautiful variegated orange {NY38 two-tone stripes} ribbon and added a stripe of Herma Dotto adhesive to the end to tack in place and began winding the ribbon around the ornament. I continued wrapping, slightly overlapping each previous wrap and continued all the way around. When I reached the beginning, I added another stripe of Dotto adhesive to secure the end. Easy Peasy!

Next I selected an orange, gold and green check {WTT28 3/8" Metallic Band} pattern to line the outer edge. For this I applied the Herma Dotto adhesive along the entire length that I cut to fit and pressed into place. I left about 2" overhang and looped this back over onto itself to form a leaf shape. The Herma Dotto is a dry adhesive that it great for tacking down ribbon on cards, scrapbook pages and flat surfaces.

The finishing touch is to add a hanger and some contrast to the stem with WS-02 Celery Sheer/Iridescent Pinstripe ribbon. I first cut a piece that was about 10" and tied to the top of the stem, knotting in place with the two loose ends meeting at the top. I laid the two ends over each other and tied in a knot to form a closed loop to hang. I added some Dotto adhesive to the end of another section and wrapped around the entire stem area, trimmed and tacked down the loose end with more adhesive. My pumpkin complete and totally full of personality!

Now on to the bat. I have a silvery grey ribbon that is two-tone like brushed metal - lighter on one side and slightly darker on the other. I applied Dotto adhesive down the length of this ribbon and applied to the outer edge of the cookie cutter.

I repeated with the black/white grosgrain circles ribbon and centered right on top of the grey ribbon - pretty straightforward… but is so Totes Adorbs {sorry… couldn't resist}.

 

This little pretty also needs a hanger! I grabbed my spool of natural SM-10 burlap string and a black Sharpie marker to color it to match. I have loads of inks, markers and paints… so the best way to make sure they are always getting used is coloring everything in sight - INCLUDING my staple spools of May Arts burlap string, EA-01 crinkle white nylon ribbon and paper raffia {each in white or natural}.

I have two ornaments done quick and easy and they are so lovely - they can be used for seasonal decor, gift toppers or even for the kids to make at the Halloween party.

 

I want to add a little more personality to the cat and the frankenstein head with some GOOGLIE eyes, resin and hardware before I trim those with ribbon. I'll be sure to share them before I send them off to a happy home at the craft fair.

All Dolled Up for the Halloween Ball... and for the May Arts Halloween Craft Challenge

Happy Thursday! I can't believe Halloween is just a week away... but this Ghoulish Gal is ready to par-tay wearing this fanciful witches hat complete with matching handbag. 

These creations were inspired by the May Arts Halloween Craft Challenge and I was one of the twenty selected participants provided with May Arts Ribbon to create with using this inspiration...

You know me I love a good challenge and I love to greencraft whenever possible. I set off to gather up some goodies in my stash to add to the five gorgeous ribbons sent to me by the Bethney {a.k.a. the Ribbon Lady} at May Arts Ribbon. I received a generous amount of each of these to create with {except for the black burlap twine}.

I've been in a streak of purple projects lately and this one was no exception because I have a bag of scraps containing many off-cut strips of purple organza waiting for the perfect project to be utilized. Well this Halloween Craft Challenge was it!

I first began with the purse which started out as an empty recycled vinyl tote - you know the ones that contain gifts of lotions and potions and other tasty goodness around the holidays... I save these for repurposing for crafty projects.

I am all about the details and these beautiful May Arts Ribbon are full of it. I layered three of the ribbons using stitch witchery {iron-on fusible webbing} to create the strap which wraps all the way around the vinyl purse structure.

I put the layered side of the ribbon down which can be seen on the inside and also is a nice detail and contrast on the inside of the handle.

The side of the handle is tied off with the black crinkle satin and accented with some blinged up party favors. 

My favorite part is the skeleton hand that looks like its crawling through the spider web ruffles on the front. Some purple organza tucked inside to conceal the contents and this purse is complete.

The hat is made from a recycled piece of black canson paper that had something I started drawing on it... so long ago that I can't even recall what it was. So a witch hat base it became! I adhered the purple organza to the top and to the brim them began adding the spider web ruffles and the layered ribbon around as a belt with a buckle from my notions box. I twisted and coiled the black satin crinkle around the cone with gives a playful twist. With my strappy purple satin heels, little black dress and purple spiderwebbed cape... this duo completes my Halloween party attire.

All is Merry and Bright... Celebrating Christmas in July with Anything But a Card Challenges #24

Hello! Happy Sunday everyone! I'm so excited to for this new Anything But a Card Challenge... Challenge 24 is "CHIRSTMAS in July". I'm so excited for this theme, because I'm ALL ABOUT CHRISTMAS and I haven't created any Christmas themed crafts at all yet in 2013. Last year for my Unscripted Sketches projects, I worked in the holiday spirit ALL year. Yep - that's right, 52 Christmas projects last year - many of them GRINCHY, too!

Last year, my mom knitted me this "OFFICIAL" Elf Hat for Christmas complete with lights. Isn't it great!!!

The new Challenge... Anything But a Card Challenge 24 has fallen on the Eve of  "CHRISTMAS in July". So this theme gives everyone a chance to jumpstart their handmade holiday crafting projects. Anything Goes with this theme! Have fun creating your Hanukkah (Chanukah) or Christmas projects and get your giftmaking done E-A-R-L-Y! Just remember create anything except a card... and to have FUN!!!

Since I was little we always made ornaments and other goodies for the holidays - and it still rings true today. I love making ornaments and these first two ornaments are made from vintage cookie cutters. These cookie cutters are a little tattered and rusty, but full of charm. So I have creatively repurposed them to live on my Christmas tree all glittery adorned with May Arts Ribbons.

This vintage candy cane cookie cutter has been transformed into a gorgeous sparkling ornament. This sparkles and shimmers from every angle!

This revamped vintage snowman cookie cutter is now an ornament that is as sparkly as Frosty the Snowman's personality.

Finally, this is a handmade paper tree made of two triangles cut from collaged painted papers and embellished with May Arts glittery goodness. This tree is 4" x 6" size and folds flat to fit perfectly into a 5" x 7" envelope so it can double as a Christmas card.

May Arts Ribbon used: Green String SJ15; Red Metallic Velvet 377-38-14; White Curly Sparkly SE01; Silver Metallic SL55; and Gold Metallic Crochet: HP30.
